Antartide: una stazione di ricerca statunitense, all'inizio dell'inverno del 1982. La base è sorvolata da un elicottero proveniente dalla vicina stazione di ricerca norvegese. L'equipaggio sta cercando di uccidere un cane fuggito dalla loro base. Dopo la distruzione dell'elicottero, i membri della squadra statunitense decidono di andare alla base norvegese, troveranno tutti morti o dispersi ed i resti di una strana creatura bruciata. Gli americani portano i resti alla loro base e ne deducono che è una forma di vita aliena. Scopriranno a loro spese che l'alieno può prendere il sopravvento ed assimilarsi ad altre forme di vita, inclusi gli umani, diffondendosi come un virus...

Antarctica: a US research station, Antarctica, early-winter 1982. The base is buzzed by a helicopter from the nearby Norwegian research station. They are trying to kill a dog that has escaped from their base. After the destruction of the Norwegian chopper, the members of the US team decided to go to the Norwegian base: they find them all dead or missing and the remains of a burned strange creature. The Americans take it to their base and deduce that it is an alien life form. After a while it is apparent that the alien can take over and assimilate into other life forms, including humans, spreading like a virus...
